Voxnova Italia is an ensemble of soloists dedicated to 20th and 21st century music and its sources. An Italian ensemble with global activities, it performs the works of the great composers of vocal music of our time as well as helping young composers and unjustly neglected composers to be better known.

The singers in Voxnova Italia all have important careers. They have “real voices” capable of singing Mozart as well as Xenakis. They come together out of a love for the music of our time and a desire to perform chamber music. Separately, they continue to perform in operas, with orchestra, in recitals, etc.

Voxnova has performed in prestigious venues such as IRCAM, the Centre Pompidou (France), Ars Musica (Belgium), De Unie in Rotterdam, the Muziekcentrum in Utrecht and De Ijsbreker in Amsterdam (Holland), the WDR, MDR, Hessischer Rundfunk, Südwestfunk radio halls, The Inventionen Festival and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin (Germany), the Alicante and Huesca festivals (Spain), and Romaeuropa and Settembre Musica (Italy), as well as a tour of Asia (including Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan).  Most recently, we performed Stockhausen’s “Stimmung” at the Jacaranda festival in Los  Angeles.

Voxnova has sung numerous world premieres, including works by Giacinto Scelsi, Steve Lacy, Luis De Pablo, Pascal Dusapin, Luca Francesconi, Betsy Jolas, Suzanne Giraud and Gerard Pape. We have worked with the Arditti Quartet, 2e2m and l’Itinéraire.

Voxnova is eclectic and open. We “compose” our programs which enable the audience to discover all tendencies in new music and put them in their context. All compositions of the 20th and 21st centuries which fully develop melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, space and timbre interest us. We also perform ethnic music, jazz, non-classical music and pre 20th art music that has influenced the composers of our time.  Improvisation is also an important aspect of our work.

Technology plays an increasingly important role in vocal music. The dialogue between voice and tape, the amplification of the voice, the transformation of the voice with live and/or “real time” electronics open up a world of possibilities for composers. Voxnova constitutes a living vocal laboratory for composers of electroacoustic music. This work has already been carried out in workshops, research and concerts at IRCAM and UPIC.

Voxnova takes special care to make each concert a pleasure for the eyes as well as the ears. Costumes, lights and movement are worked on with great care. We provide an ensemble of 8 experienced singing actors for the needs of opera composers and music theater composers.

Even though the general public seems more and more interested in good performances of the masterpieces of our time, young people still have few opportunities to get to know this repertoire. Voxnova is active in helping young people learn about new vocal music and has taught numerous workshops.
